How we use AI tools
We use AI tools in drafting. Every article is reviewed by the editorial team before publication, and the rules below describe what AI can and cannot do here.
What AI tools are used for
AI tools are used as drafting and research aids: outlining an article, drafting plain language from our notes and outlines, and summarizing source material so the editorial team can check it. The register and structure rules in our writing guidelines apply to AI-assisted drafts the same way they apply to any draft.
What AI tools never do
- AI is never the publisher. Every article is reviewed by the editorial team before publication — the fact-checks described in our Editorial Policy are performed by people, against primary sources.
- AI is never used to invent facts, deadlines, dollar amounts, quotes, sources, or people. Anything that cannot be verified against a primary source is removed or rewritten.
- AI is not a named author or reviewer, and no synthetic identity is ever presented as a writer, editor, or reviewer.
- AI doesn't make editorial decisions. Topic selection, review, and corrections are made by the editorial team.

This policy is the disclosure: AI tools are used in drafting, and every article is reviewed by the editorial team before publication. If our process changes, this policy changes with it before the new process is used.
